Commercialism, obviously, knows no bounds
The first time I saw this - on our first or second day here gliding along the Grand Canal on a vaporetto going somewhere, I can't remember where - I seriously could not believe my eyes. Those of you who have been here will recognize the beautiful little architectural detail in the center of the photo below as The Bridge of Sighs. It is one of the most famous sites in Venice and while most people think it has something to do with romance, it actually got its name because it was the place where prisoners on their way to their fates took their last breath of fresh air. And they would sigh. It is a beautiful landmark. And right now it is surrounded - completely and totally surrounded almost to the point of obscuring it - by ads for Sisley, a clothing store chain. I don't know what else to say about it. That it's appalling?
