Okay, okay, okay...I know. I said I'd get right to this as soon as I arrived last Thursday. Well, you know what they say. Stuff happens. So in order to catch up before things get even more backed up, here's the :60 highlights package:
-trip over was perfect - comfortable, on time, etc.
-great to be back at Palazzetto da Schio - greeted warmly by Contessa Anna AND Webby
-straight back to some old haunts - Vecio Forner (not the same somehow and our first spritz there may well have been our last), Schiave for wine and cichette (as good as we remembered and have already been there twice), Rizzo Pane, Billa, the cheese guy, the wine guy, the forcole guy, Rialto Market, Vizio Virtu (SUCH incredible chocolate)...a home-cooked dinner and good home-cooked breakfasts - try throwing your leftover pasta into an omelette!
-and some new ones - Marchini (dolci), Acqua Pazza for pizza that rivals the pies on last fall's Brooklyn Pizza Pilgrimage, Taverna San Trovaso for sarde en saor - Venice's "national" dish" - and ravioloni (BIG ravioli) stuffed with ricotta and porcini mushrooms in a butter (BUTTER) and truffle oil sauce - oh my goodness! Tonight, dinner at a tiny local osteria off Campo San Barnaba for gnocchi - with veal ragout and SAFFRON (so good!)
-taking care of business - a trip to the Biennale office - useless - a trip to the ACTV office to get vaporetto passes for the month - like a Saturday Night Live sketch and it required TWO spritz in the middle of the afternoon but we do, indeed, have our passes
-Contessa Anna invited us for coffee this mid-morning - (she calls it her "elevenses" which she has at 10:30 - so cute!) - she's planning her daughter's wedding for September and shared some Venetian traditions and showed us some of her family's treasures. We're going to cook her dinner one night and invite her out with us one night, too.
okay, there you have it...
I promise to be more detailed and to post photos...starting tomorrow.
For now mi amici, buona notte from La Serenissima.
