Neighbor Island Day

I have been wanting to visit San Michele - known as the Cemetery Island - and today I did. It is a green and peaceful and thought-provoking place. Tourists go to visit the graves of the famous - Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Brodsky, Sergei Diaghliev, Ezra Pound (we could NOT find him), and Emilio Vedova, a beloved native son and influential contemporary artist who died just before the last Biennale. But "regular" Venetians come every day to visit their 'ohana. Every grave is cared for. Every grave has flowers. It is stirring to behold. And, of course, no photos are permitted.

We continued on through the lagoon to Murano. Glass, glass and more glass. Much of it not worth a look; plenty of it absolutely spectacular, including every piece on display in the museum. How is it possible that lighter-than-air glass vessels survive from the 1st Century? It's astounding.

The premier design studios - Moretti, Segusa, the Sent sisters, Venini, Barovier - produce stunning contemporary work. We looked and oohed and aahed and appreciated it all. Did we buy anything? We indulged in some inexpensive earrings. Fun we could afford and reminders of the day on Murano.

On the way home, we stopped at Cavatappi (corkscrew), a simple and stylish little wine bar behind St. Mark's. Fresh, delicious food, a great wine list and one of the decidedly best spritz in Venice (or so they say and we agree).

It's 10:45 p.m...tomorrow is another day. Buona notte, mi amici, from Venezia.
