It was a dark and stormy night

Another wild thunder, lightning and rain storm started in the middle of the night last night - and the pouring rain did not let up 'til well past noon today. Now, the sun is shining and everything is clean and lovely.

I walked today - again - from one end of the city to the other visiting a few more Biennale installations I hadn't yet seen. Today - Ukraine, Thailand and Croatia. All very cool. Croatia was installed inside the Fondazione Querini Stampalia museum so I took the opportunity to see the the rest of the museum, too, which is really a historic residence from the 16th Century. Very FAAAAANCY. One innovation is that they have invited contemporary artists - right now it's Palestinian-born Mona Hatoum - to install their modern work into the residence's classical setting. In some cases, you REALLY have to look for it and when you find it, it presents a new and interesting perspective. For example, in one room there are two period display cabinets filled with beautiful glass...hand grenades. (And in this land of "NO," no photos, I'm afraid.)

When I got home I looked at my little Biennale Survival Guide and realized just how much art I have seen in the last month. I have seen A LOT OF ART. And I have A LOT of photos of art that Gill is sure to enjoy putting into on-line galleries for all to see.

Now food. (Surprise!)

We had a great dinner last night at a contemporary restaurant called Avogaria. Husband and wife team - she's the chef - created a lovely restaurant space and a little garden, not unlike La Bitta's - and then added a three-room locanda. The food was clearly made with love which, of course, you can taste. I had gorgeous handmade orrechiette with tiny meatballs in a rich tomato sauce and a beautiful green salad. Wanda had an amazing eggplant parmiagiana - which included a thin slice of mortadella in the stack - and a little pesto drizzle all around. Then she had bresciola - different from any either of us had ever had. The meat tasted almost like pot roast. And, yes, tiramisu. But I believe that Battle of the Bands: Tiramisu has been won by Vini da Arturo, a title that little hole-in-the-wall restaurant with the magnificent food may hold for a long, long time. Avogaria's was delicious - with a hint of cinnamon that was nice and unexpected - but they will have to settle for no better than second place. The Battle does, however, go on...

(I'm posting photos of my two courses and the tiramisu in a separate post as soon as I publish this one - the photo formatting is not as easy as it looks and I'm gettin' tired.)

Tonight, La Zucca.
